Moving Tips
If you are planning a move, you can be proactive to make the process easier and smoother. The following are some helpful tips to get your life and your possessions organized to avoid the frustrations of moving:
Write it down. Before you begin packing a box, make a list and create a simple checklist. Every day will present a new challenge, so it is important that you have a system. It is recommended that you write the name of the room or a number on each box to avoid confusion. For example, place the number “B2” for a secondary bedroom, “MBD” for master bedroom and “BTH” for bathroom cleaning/toiletry items.
Buy it in advance. Before you start the packing process, you will need an abundance of boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, among others. You should have a minimum of 10 boxes set aside for last minute items on moving day, such as bedding, clothing and cleaning supplies.
Keep things together. Insist on keeping things together when you or the movers are packing boxes. Keep bookends with books, light bulbs with lamps and extension cords with appliances. Small, loose parts can be attached to the item they belong to with tape or placed in small envelopes -- to keep picture hooks with pictures, shelf brackets with a bookcase, a special wrench and bolts with the wall unit.
Plan ahead. Whatever you can do in advance will make the moving day easier. If you are moving during cold months, box up your summer clothing and shoes. If you have a lot of extra cleaning items or bathroom accessories, box up those items and keep out only what you will need in the coming days.
Use luggage and shopping bags. Fill luggage, duffle and shopping bags with clothing, sheets, towels and paper goods. Even with the smallest of moves, you will be able to quickly spot a suitcase easier than dozens of boxes.
Keep it safe. It is recommended to keep valuable possessions, such as collections, antiques and important paperwork with you. If you have a long move and no room in your car, bury the items in a box titled "Miscellaneous from Office.” You should also find out what paperwork (receipts, appraisals and photos) you might need to file a claim in case of loss.
Keep important documents separate. Your list of papers might include: birth certificates, school records, mover estimates, bank records, current bills, phone lists, closing papers, realtor information, among others. Do not leave these with the mover. Keep them with you.
